The planters are made of a non-woven fabric that allows air and water to pass through. Perhaps unusual for a flower pot, but ideal and essential for plant growth!

Oxygen is a vital component for plants, just as it is for all other organisms! While the green parts of the plant produce oxygen through photosynthesis, the oxygen supply to the roots is dependent on the supply from the environment. Plants do not have an active transport mechanism for oxygen, they depend on diffusion. If this is lacking, there can be a lack of oxygen in the plant tissue. This is called hypoxia. Excessive watering of potting soil inhibits gas transport in the soil. This can cause the oxygen concentration in the plant tissue to drop so much that an optimal energy supply is no longer possible.
